WASINGTON, D.C. – The American Civil Liberties Union in Washington, D.C. has filed suit against the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China for allegedly releasing a “flagrantly racist” virus which is “disproportionately killing the black community.”
Elvia Diaz, USA Today contributor, points out in: “Why is coronavirus killing so many black Americans? Because they are poor,” “Who’s really shocked that black people are dying at higher rates from COVID-19? Mainstream America, of course. The same folks who have not only ignored the deep-rooted economic disparity of people of color but who have fostered it with racial bias.”
Ibram X. Kendi, Director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University, wrote a compelling op-ed: “Stop Blaming Black People for Dying of the Coronavirus” which astutely surmises: “Without question, African Americans suffer disproportionately from chronic diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, lung disease, obesity, and asthma, which make it harder for them to survive COVID-19. But…[we should] also be asking: Why are African American [sic] suffering more from these chronic diseases? Why are African Americans more likely to be obese than Latinos and whites?…If black people receive inferior care from hospitals and doctors, are black people to blame? If black people are less likely to be insured, are black people are [sic] to blame? If hospitals in majority-black counties are overloaded with coronavirus patients, are black people to blame?”
John H. McWhorter, a writer for City Journal, likewise argues against a “deeply felt cult of victimology that grips the entire black community,” in “What’s Holding Blacks Back?” McWhorter goes on to say: “Let’s hope that in 2021, the networks won’t feel that any talk of black personal responsibility needs to be balanced by victimology from some fading anachronism like Ishmael Reed or Maxine Waters. That’s when we will know that we are past the coded fraud that passes for interracial discourse today and have made the kind of progress that yesterday’s civil rights’ leaders would recognize and applaud.”
Echoing all of the above sentiments, Anthony D. Romero, the ACLU’s Executive Director, told Article 107 News: “The ACLU has always, and will always, refuse to let the black community be victimized. It is precisely this victimology which prompted legal action against this bigoted virus and source of racism.”
