NEW YORK, NY — UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged the Security Council last week to display unity as it met to discuss what he called the “fight of a generation” — the global coronavirus pandemic. Guterres reiterated that message during today’s virtual summit, “Everybody is Kung Flu fighting.” He stated this is “a human crisis that is fast becoming a human rights crisis” and emphasized the need for international collaboration “as fast as lightning.”
The world’s top diplomat warned that with “rising ethno-nationalism, populism, authoritarianism and a push back against human rights in some countries, the crisis can provide a pretext to adopt repressive measures for purposes unrelated to the pandemic.”
Guterres ended his speech to the assembled world leaders, saying: “The future is a little bit frightening,” and insisted the UN action required to defeat COVID-19 requires “expert timing.”
