WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) of New York has been outspoken during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the 30-year-old congresswoman: “When we have this discussion about going back or reopening, I think a lot people should just say no — we’re not going back to that.” She added: “We’re not going back to working 70-hour weeks just so that we can put food on the table and not even feel any sort of semblance of security in our lives.”
Leading from the front, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez ceased all interactions with Congress, but it will take some time before the impact is felt. The House has averaged 138 legislative days each year since 2001 leaving over 6 months of “free time” for lawmakers to use as they see fit. During her boycott, AOC plans to use her annual allowances (averaging $1.27 million) to staff and manage for travel and other expenses.
When asked if she was considering quitting Congress altogether, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez remarked she would “graciously serve” at least another four years. Having been a public servant since January 2019, she must reach the 5 years of service required to earn her lifelong pension of 80% — which, given today’s congressional salary of $174,000, equals out to $139,200 in annual taxpayer-funded retirement benefits.
Data from The Pew Research Center shows a 22% increase in Congressional efficiency and 30-point boost to Congress’ average IQ since Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s self-imposed boycott.
